Freckles, sometimes called ephelides (singular ephelis), are clusters of concentrated melaninized cells which are most easily visible on people with a fair complexion. Freckles do not have an increased number of the melanin-producing cells, or melanocytes, but instead have melanocytes that overproduce melanin granules (melanosomes) changing the coloration of the outer skin cells (keratinocytes). As such, freckles are different from lentigines and moles.

It is quite frequent that people with red hair also have pale skin and show freckles

So what are the freckle frequencies worldwide?
Studies need to be done as many have some freckles and what level constitutes “having freckles” has to universally be agreed upon.
Freckles are a dominant trait and when one of your parents has much darker skin than the other, you can take on the complexion of the lighter skinned parent yet display evidence of your other parent’s darkness in form of freckles showing up. That is why facial melasma was independently associated with African ancestry in a highly admixed population such as Brazil.
