The “Dicsussion” section of one study showing no Neanderthal y-DNA present in today’s population also theorized that the reason for it could have been fertility issues between Neanderthal males and human females. They then continued that had there been children between Neanderthal men and human women, offspring would have likely been sterile. I have looked for evidence just in case I have overlooked something, but there isn’t any I am aware of.
