An early regional stage of Yamnaya is labeled the Mikhaylovka culture. It was preceded by the middle Volga-based Khvalynsk culture and the Don-based Repin culture (c. 3950\u20133300 BC), and late pottery from these two cultures can barely be distinguished from early Yamnaya pottery. It was preceded by the Early Eneolithic Samara culture, from which it came, and succeeded by the Late Eneolithic, Early Yamna culture, into which it developed.\n\n\n\n<p> Recent genetic studies have shown that <strong>males of the Khvalynsk culture carried primarily the paternal haplogroup R1b<\/strong>, although a few samples of R1a, I2a2, Q1a and J has been detected. They belonged to the Western Steppe Herder (WSH) cluster, which is a mixture of Eastern Hunter-Gatherer (EHG) and Caucasian Hunter-Gatherer (CHG) ancestry.
