Aside from the traits mentioned, the centenarians also had other qualities such as being positive thinkers, strong family ties, positive work ethic, religiosity, and being fond of the countryside. Majority of these older adults, moreover, were also found to be working frequently at home and were still active.

A strong will to live?

Centenarians, a rare population of individuals who reach 100 years or more, experience delays in aging-related diseases and mortality which suggests their immune systems remain functional into extreme old age.

When asked how she had survived to her great age, Knauss responded that one should “keep yourself busy, work hard, and not worry about how old you are.” She was a non-smoker and was never considered obese at any point in her life. She did have a fondness for sweets, however, and her great-granddaughter claimed that Knauss “hated vegetables.” A member of the staff at Knauss’ nursing home claimed that she was the friendliest of all residents at the home, and her relatives failed to remember a point in her life that she scolded anyone or even appeared stressed.

Carrie C. White (née Joyner ) ( November 18 , 1874 or August 1888 – February 14 , 1991 ) was an American woman who Guinness World Records recognized as the oldest person in the world in 1988, the year she was supposedly born 114 years. This claim was based on documents from the Florida State Hospital , where she was institutionalized from 1909 to 1984, which listed her date of birth as November 18, 1874. Carrie officially held the title of oldest person until her death in 1991, reportedly with the age of 116 years. However, hospital records were later disputed and eventually revealed to be in error, with Carrie’s actual birth date apparently being in August 1888. She preferred to be referred to as Laura Oliver during her hospital stay.
