Basque Has One of the Oldest Cultures in Europe

The Basque Country is one of Europe’s oldest cultures. Some theories suggest Basques are a remnant of the Palaeolithic inhabitants of Western Europe, some 35,000 years ago. Caesar even made reference to their customs back in Roman times.

The Basque witch trials of the seventeenth century represent the last attempt at rooting out supposed witchcraft from Navarre by the Spanish Inquisition, after a series of episodes erupted during the sixteenth century following the end of military operations in the conquest of Iberian Navarre, until 1524.

Many decades ago, it was suggested in one of A.E. Mourant’s papers, that Neanderthals were responsible for Rh negative blood today.

As in many other cultures, Basque mythology builds upon the four natural elements, fire, earth, air and water. However, earth is at its core; in fact, the primary character is Mari, the goddess of earth, who can adopt any desired shape and lives in a score of havens across the Basque Country.
