What Are Their Differences? In short, the difference between hazel eyes and those with central heterochromia lies in how the melanin is dispersed. Hazel eyes can appear to be two different colors, but they blend together at some point, where central heterochromia has two very distinct rings of color within the iris.

Someone with hazel eyes, the brown diffuses into the region with the green. The amount of diffusion varies from person to person. This diffusion makes it appear like the eyes change colors with different light sources and changes in surrounding colors.

With central heterochromia, the areas of color are more distict. There is not a gradation in colors, but rather a distict transition from the inner color to the outer color of the iris. Usually, the inner color appears like a star pattern around the pupil.

    As an experiment I have recently been looking at eye colour and central heterochromia with interest, I am beginning personally believe it to be a relatively reliable way to distinguish an RH negative person.

    All central Heterochromia colours can be seen, though particularly if the central Heterochromia is goldish (as an easy example Angelina Jolie or Calista Flockhart), for hazel eyes I personally tend to believe that gold central Heterochromia may extend to the edge of the “Iris”, making the whole Iris appear to have a golden hue in different lighting (Trivia – Search “Iris mythology”, interesting belief on what the god “Iris” stands for…)

    As my only real source was online photos, by looking at these photos, it appears that many leaders and actors currently in the spot light have this eye characteristic, considering the frequency of RH negatives it strikes me as an odd statistical anomaly.

    Anyway, it’s a coincidental characteristic I’m observing which I don’t believe is based on science so I’m happy to be proven incorrect.
